Introduction to the “Around the World Cooking Challenge”

I decided recently that I need to expand my cultural food knowledge and start experiencing new things. Apart from starting this blog, I mean. During the times of quarantine and social distancing, I sadly can’t just buy plane tickets and go travelling. However, I still have the possibility to order groceries at home and cook!

So, I had an idea. What better way to experience new things than trying to prepare dishes from random different countries? Let the challenge begin!

What exactly is this challenge?

The rules of my challenge are simple:
– I click a “Randomize” button in a world country randomizer and see what country comes up
– Then, I will research recipes from this country
– I choose some and will try to make the recipes
– I will write about my experience, so you could also try!
– P.S. Each country only once – let’s try to go through them all

The number of recipes I will pick per country will most likely vary but I do want to try at least something sweet and something salty. My goal is also to pick recipes I’ve never tried to make before – this means saying NO to many widely-known dishes. On the other hand, it might also mean finally saying YES to some that have been in my “To Do” list for a long time!

Sounds easy enough, right? 🙂

Well, there are many countries in the world whose food is very popular and the ingredients are widely available, such as Italia, Mexico, or Thailand. Then again, when was the last time you cooked made something from Togo? Or Romania? Or Uzbekistan? In addition to simply not knowing about many cultures, I must also consider ingredient limitations when picking the dishes as not everything is going to be available in the stores here.

You can probably expect to see new countries come up once per month. However, as an exception, the very first posts will come already next week!

I expect it to be a lot of fun and I want you guys to cook and bake along! Thus, I’m interested – where are you from? Any interesting places you’ve travelled to? Do you know a cool recipe from there that I should try? Let me know in the comments!

First Challenge

I believe that now is the time to spin the wheel and see what comes up as our first challenge. Are you excited?

Here we go…

What do you know about the cuisine of Qatar? I must admit, I have no clue. I guess it’s about time I go and start researching…

Until next week,
Helena ♡
