List of The Great British Bake Off Technical Challenge Recipes

In this post, I want to gather all of the shortened recipes from all of the technical challenges from the Great British Bake Off episodes. I realized there is no single reliable place where one could actually see these recipes and attempt the challenges themselves without ruining the fun by watching the show first- so I decided to write them down.

I will be adding more recipes as I go and watch through the episodes. I hope it is useful!

What are the technical challenges?

thegreatbritishbakeoff.co.uk describes the technical challenges in The Great British Bake Off as follows:

“This challenge separates the wheat from the chaff. Take one basic recipe, with the same ingredients and instructions, and ask our bakers to produce the finished product… sound easy? Well, any variation on the finished product will be a result of their own technical knowledge and experience – or lack of. Bakers are laid bare in this task and this is where the pressure’s really on in the Bake Off.”

What they don’t mention here is that the recipes in the technical challenges are actually much shorter than normal and contain very few details about the whole process. So the bakers are often left to their own assumptions and guesses about what the end result even should look like.

Which makes it really fun!

Where do I get the recipes?

Basically, I will watch the episodes and gather as much information about the technical challenges from there as I can – what the bakers or the narrator are saying, for example. Sometimes we might get luckier – in the first week of Season 1, the whole recipe was shown on the camera!

Once I have gathered the information, I will check it against the actual full recipe to see if it’s enough to successfully make it – I might make some adjustments where necessary but I want to keep it as close to the original as possible. I will also post the needed equipment and the preparation steps, so you could set everything up as needed before starting your timer.

If you want to check out some of my own attempts, check here. I’m also using the short versions and time limits. However, do keep in mind that I probably know a bit more since I’ve watched the episodes and read the full recipes through at least a few times.

Ready, get set… BAKE!

  • Thank you so much for compiling this list of technical challenges. I recently started baking seriously and I wanted to see how I would do in the technical challenges. I couldn’t find a site with all of them except for now! You are amazing! Thank you!

  • I am so excited to see this! I’ve been looking for a list of technical challenge recipes (or something close) as opposed to fun one off baker favorites. So looking forward to the rest! Cheering you on!
